Vineland Ramada Inn saves with solar
NJ.com (March 2010)
By Jason Laday
VINELAND — The Vineland Ramada Inn on Friday unveiled its completed solar project to harvest the sun toward 80 percent of the hotel’s electricity needs.
In a press event before the vast field of solar arrays behind the Landis Avenue Ramada, co-owner John Scipione stated the $2.6 million project saves the business $8,000 to $10,000 per month in energy costs.
“But it will pay for itself sooner than those numbers imply,” said Scipione, flanked by his wife and hotel co-owner Annette, following the press conference. “There are federal tax credits that reimburse 30 percent of the costs of the project.
“It’s just something we wanted to do to save money and also become part of the state’s green economy. This is the first member of the Wyndam Hotel family to use solar power.”
Scipione stated the solar panels will pay for themselves in just under three years.
According to officials with the hotel, the solar array system behind the hotel will generate 620,620 kW hours of electricity per year — enough to power 50 households.
The system overproduces electricity, the energy will be stored, and not put back into the electrical grid, to make up for instances when the system under produces.
In addition to opening the solar field, the Scipiones, who purchased the hotel in May 2009, have been outfitting the building with more energy-saving electrical devices.
“We’ve gone through and switched out 1,400 incandescent bulbs for fluorescent bulbs,” said Scipione. “We’re also going to be doing a state energy audit, and try reduce our gas bills.”
Ditching the incandescent bulbs will save the hotel $2,500 per month in energy costs, according to the owners. They spent 95 cents per fluorescent bulb.
Officials from the Paterson, N.J,-based company that install the solar panels, Pfister, stated they were proud to be part of the project.
“This is what we do,” said Pfister Chief Financial Officer Jonathan Lee. “We’re excited that more people and companies are turning toward solar energy as a less expensive way to power their homes and business.”

Federal courthouse shining example of solar benefits
The Times (January 2010)
By Matt Fair
TRENTON – With a new set of solar panels laid out on its roof to provide electricity and hot water, the Clarkson S. Fisher Federal Courthouse on East State Street is letting the sunshine in.
Operated by the federal General Services Administration (GSA), officials there said they wanted to see the United States government become a leader in “green” technology and alternative energy.
“GSA is one of the largest owners and operators of building space in the world,” said Gina Gilliam, a regional GSA spokeswoman. “With a footprint of this magnitude, it is important for the federal government to raise the baseline and set the trend for buildings nationwide and help encourage eco-friendly alternatives both large and small.”

A Skyrocketing Bottom Line
The Record (September 2009)
By Carol Fletcher
Revenue at three North Jersey companies has surged enough over the last three years for
these enterprises to be counted among America's 500 fastest-growing businesses by Inc.
magazine.
"When the going gets tough, the tough show up here" is how the financial publication described the companies. Aggregate 2008 revenue at all 500 businesses was $18.4 billion, eclipsing the prior year's total by nearly $5 billion. Businesses on the annual list have to show full calendar years of sales from 2005 to 2008. They must be based in the United States, be private, be for-profit and be independent as of Dec. 31, 2008.
Installers fear that pay mandate may squeeze them out of the market
The Record (July 2009)
By Carol Fletcher
A new state law has installers of renewable energy projects worried.
They say the measure requiring them to pay prevailing wage – essentially union levels – to workers on so-called green projects will lift labor costs, make the companies less competitive with larger businesses that can afford higher pay and slow the state’s growing renewable energy industry.
The legislation was signed on July 15 and requires workers on non-residential projects that get Board of Public Utilities funding assistance, or require BPU approval, be paid prevailing wage.
Small installers and makers of solar systems and wind turbines say they are the ones that will be hurt, because many large businesses already pay union wages or hire union workers. In response, several say they will join or support the 72-member trade association, the Mid-Atlantic Solar Energy Industries Association (MSEIA), if it follows through on its statement to challenge the legislation.

Ready, Set, Launch
Baltimore Business Journal (May 2009)
by Scott Dance
...For Bill Cole, it was easier to take the risk because he’s partnering with an existing company — one that is also still his employer.
Cole started Pfister Energy in Baltimore in January. He had seen the attention given to growth and demand for solar energy during the past few years. He decided he could break into the business without completely going out on a limb by staying and partnering with his family-owned business, Cole Roofing Inc., where he is still a vice president who oversees sales.
“I’m able to leverage that I’ve got the
equipment and the manpower of a 90-year-old roofing company,” Cole said.
So far, he splits his time fairly evenly between the two companies as he drums up business. Some days that means spending more time digging up leads for solar system sales; others, it means working with roofing clients all day, and then catching up on Pfister at night...
Bright Ideas
Distributed Energy Magazine (March/April 2009)

New-and-improved technologies help companies save on energy costs, make work environments user-friendly, and reduce electrical grid loads.
Whether speaking of one-of-a-kind technological advances or the concept and process of “bundling” to address energy needs and savings, there’s a lot going on—hybrid daylighting, induction lighting, light-emitting diodes (LED) roaring down the pike, new ways to control the flow of voltage from older lamps, new lighting techniques that allow controlling to be from a computer anywhere in the world, and putting it all together in one bundle, from the photovoltaics on the roof to the smallest exit sign. Clearly, energy-efficient lighting is on a roll.
The Right Technology for the Right Problem
Energy-efficient lighting is what the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) on the University of California (UC) Davis campus is all about. Established through a joint effort of the California Energy Commission and UC Davis to stimulate the research, development, and application of energy-efficient lighting, CLTC is part of the Design Department in the College of Letters and Science. CLTC’s Director of Engineering, Bruce Pelton says, “We use the university and college system as a test bed. Right now, we’re using four parking lots on campus to test three lighting systems. Moving towards white light, we’ve conducted trials on bi-level metal hydrate, LED, and induction lamps. We’re technology neutral. The trick for us is finding the right technology for the right problem.”
According to Pelton, the State of California is looking at energy efficiency and “is outlawing low-efficient light sources. It
will soon demand that outdoor fixtures are controllable.”
Working with local utilities, Pelton says they paid one-third of the cost for the roll out of the 1500 induction lamps for
purchase and installation. “The utilities like the long-life property of the induction lamps with the energy reduction,” he
adds. “It makes more sense to conserve and delay the need for new energy sources. The utilities are paid for what they
produce and what they conserve. They will put a quarter-million dollars into this project.”...read full article

Pfister Energy to Introduce New Technologies
Rain Water Harvesting
There's money literally falling from the skies every time it rains. There are systems available that help to mitigate roof runoff and restore the natural flow of rainwater into the ground. These systems, called rainwater harvesting systems, consist of tanks that collect rainwater from rooftop downspouts and then store the water for later use outdoors, such as landscaping and irrigation.
Solar Thermal Technology
Solar thermal technology converts radiant solar energy (sunlight) to heat. This heat can then be harvested to produce power, heat water for industrial uses, passively or actively heat space, or cool space with an absorptive cooling system. The primary advantage of hybridization and thermal storage is that the technologies can provide dispatchable power and operate during periods when solar energy is not available. Hybridization and thermal storage can enhance the economic value of the electricity produced and reduce its average cost.
Pfister Energy Purchases Two Hybrid Vehicles
To date, hybrids on American roads have saved 5.5 million barrels of fuel, according to a new study from the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Lab. That's less than one full day's worth of fuel over a seven year period. The emergence of hybrids is one small but necessary step toward reducing the use of petroleum. How is Pfister leading the way?
We are proud to announce the recent purchase of two hybrid vehicles. Wayne Pfisterer, President of Pfister Energy, is committed to making the workplace a rewarding and fulfilling place to work, coupled with his commitment to protecting the planet, Pfisterer believes as a business owner, this is simply the right thing to do.
Pfister Energy employee Jeff Pruneau, Project Manager/Engineer, received the clean-operating Ford Escape Hybrid which produces near zero smog-forming emissions. Greg Corbett, Operations Manager, is driving the Mercury Mariner featuring emissions that are far cleaner than the regular Mariner. Jeff (left) and Greg (right) are pictured next to their vehicles below.

Conversation on Energy
Tom Ryan, Sales Engineer and Ericka Macko, Sales & Marketing Coordinator of Pfister Energy, who is a recognized partner of the event, attended "A Conversation on Energy" which was hosted by ConocoPhillips and Rutgers University Energy Institute on Wednesday, September 19, 2007. The Town Hall Meeting, held at the Trenton Marriott at Lafayette Yard, included speakers from ConocoPhillips and invited panelists such as the Honorable Lisa Jackson, commissioner, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection; Dr. Paul Falkowski, acting director, Rutgers University Energy Institute; and Sara Bluhm, Assistant Vice President of Energy and Federal Affairs of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association.ConocoPhillips believes it's up to today's energy leaders to set the stage for tomorrow's energy solutions, from alternatives like renewable fuels to traditional sources like oil and gas. To better understand the public's view on energy issues and to share information on what ConocoPhillips is doing to address those issues, the company is hosting town hall meetings and community events in cities big and small across America, and bringing together energy experts and concerned citizens to discuss ways to secure our energy future. The tour consists of town hall meetings and community events in which the company will engage area residents and energy users, and local community and business leaders, to discuss energy solutions that are reliable, available and environmentally friendly. Local citizens are invited to ask questions and offer suggestions, while discussing supply/demand issues and energy alternatives with industry experts. These conversations on energy are the first steps in a dialogue needed to address today's energy challenges.
