Solar installation will save taxpayers $1 million in energy costs

Pfister Energy recently installed a customized photovoltaic system on the top level of the parking deck at One Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack, NJ. What was once underutilized space will now generate electricity for the parking deck and the adjacent Bergen County Administration building. The system is expected to generate 690,690 kWh of energy in the first year of operation.

Comprised of 2,730 Trina 230-watt PV modules, the 627.900 kW (DC) solar array is affixed to an overhead structural steel canopy. This unique canopy structure maximizes parking space without taking up existing spaces or the need to install columns. It also keeps cars cooler in the hot summer months and reduces the "heat island" effect of parking surfaces such as this.

The system was installed at no cost to Bergen County due to a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement with SunLight General Capital. Over the 15-year period, taxpayers will save an estimated $1,080,000 in energy savings. The energy produced by the system will yield estimated pollution offsets equivalent to deterring an estimated 14.4 million lbs. of carbon emissions, saving 15,198 barrels of oil, or taking 1,419 passenger vehicles off the road.

This project is a win-win for the County, not only in terms of monetary savings, but also by establishing the County of Bergen as a role model for other counties and municipalities in the state to adopt renewables and implement clean energy practices.

Pfister Energy project manager, Will Jawish, named one of the first Certified Solar Roofing Professionals by RISE

William Jawish, project manager of Pfister Energy's Baltimore office, has been designated a Certified Solar Roofing Professional™ (CSRP™). Roof Integrated Solar Energy,™ Inc. (RISE™) named Jawish as one of its first CSRPs. RISE, created by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing and the National Roofing Contractors Association, evaluates and certifies solar energy installers for knowledge about critical roof system construction and maintenance practices necessary to support successful rooftop solar energy installations.

Automated daylight harvesting is an energy-saving tactic

By incorporating automated daylight harvesting into commercial buildings, natural light can be used in place of or in conjunction with electric lighting to reduce overall energy load. New wireless lighting control technologies are reducing the cost and commissioning complexity of daylighting systems within commercial buildings, while helping ensure measurable sustainable energy savings are realized. Solar thermal installations could cut a quarter of today's CO2 emissions from buildings

The International Energy Agency recently released a roadmap showing how technologies such as solar thermal have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 2 gigatonnes (Gt) by 2050 - around a quarter of today's emissions from buildings. The roadmap shows how to achieve a complete transformation of heating and cooling in buildings and of providing hot water. To read the full article, click here.

Smaller particles could make solar panels more efficient

Studies done by the Colorado School of Mines could significantly improve the efficiency of solar cells. Their latest work describes how the size of light-absorbing particles--quantum dots--affects the particles' ability to transfer energy to electrons to generate electricity. Connecticut invests $1.98 million in solar projects

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund has agreed to invest $1.98 million in 14 solar energy projects that will provide churches, public buildings, schools and businesses with renewable energy.

The projects selected for the funding under the Clean Energy Fund's On-Site Renewable Distributed Generation program will generate 800 kilowatts of solar energy between them. All of the projects use photovoltaic solar panels. To read the full article, click here.

New York City mayor initiates solar plan for closed landfills

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to turn some of the city's closed landfills into solar energy farms that could help meet peak power demands in the summer months. To start, solar panels would be placed on 250 acres of the city's 3,000 acres of shuttered landfills. The energy output of these farms would meet the needs of 50,000 homes, generating up to 50 megawatts of power. The solar plan is one of several new initiatives Bloomberg has included in the environmental blueprint he issued in 2007. To read the full article, click here.
